Our Day 2 yoga challenge poses were cat-cow and crocodile! Some faces have been blurred to protect the child's identity. The poses help with posture, stretch and calming down.
Last month, I signed up the class to do a daily yoga pose challenge for this week since I have been encouraging everyone to practice yoga and to improve at flexibility, posture or breathing. Today, our first yoga pose was child's pose which is a pose to help with breathing and calming down when we are mad, frustrated, sad, etc. We also practiced our buzzing bee breath where we breath in through our nose and "buzz" it out.
Today, we talked about inventors and the definition of what an inventor is. After reading a short story of what an inventor is and what they can do, we came up with this definition: a person who makes new things or things first. Examples are: books, toys, fridges, telephones, cars, ovens, airplanes and iPads/computers. The students tried to think of 3 examples to fill in for each column for Inventors can/are/have that we will share tomorrow.
This week, we started shared writing when we think of a topic together and spell words together by sounding out words, thinking of word families, etc.
Yesterday, after hearing of some not so good choices being made during recesses, I asked the students to give me examples of good and bad choices that they have made or they can make during recess as a review.
On Wednesday, we made a list of goals that we can try next week (March 14-17) as a way of staying healthy. Our goals were:
1. Bring only healthy snacks to school (no chocolate, chips, high sugar foods) 2. Proper hygiene (teeth brushing, regular showers/baths, hand washing) 3. Be active outside for at least 30 minutes 4. Limited screen time (30 minutes or less per night) 5. Calming down/ relaxing before bed I will be making a checklist so that the students can self-assess to see if they can stay with our goals. After reading many of the most favourite Dr. Seuss books during the month of February, we finally had our Dr. Seuss party today (but the day after his birthday) since there is no school tomorrow.
One of my students' family members had ordered this super wonderful and beautifully made cakes from a cake decorator in town because yesterday was her birthday. Another parent had also brought in green eggs and ham for our party. We watched Horton Hears a Who and I had given each student a sparkly pompom with a tiny small pompom on top with the quote "A person's a person, no matter how small". I'm sure some of the students are keeping those "clovers" safe like Horton. :) Yesterday, I read the book "Bugs in my Hair" before discussing how lice can develop, ways to stop lice from growing and to avoid spreading lice to others (why Madame tells us to put our toques and mitts in our backpacks). This surrounded the topic of continuing healthy hygienic practices.
The next book "I have a Cold" talks about what it feels to have a cold which we all agree that most of the symptoms and feelings in the book happen to us too. We reviewed the ways to avoid spreading germs and getting over a cold quickly (washing hands for 20 seconds, coughing into the elbow instead of hands, staying home when possible when feeling sick, drinking lots of liquids and getting lots of sleep). |
